Final Project Proposal

Title: WarmNote

Description: A friend that sings a note when touched. The note’s pitch will depend on the temperature of the hand that the piece is held by. I would like different people to get different notes as determined by their hand temperature.

I will be using a temperature sensor and a speaker (possibly a piezo speaker) along with the arduino. As a power source, I’ll be using a battery so the pieces can be picked up and held by the viewer with less restrictions.

If I can, I’d like to make up to three of these so that they can sing together.

I’d like them to be on a shelf or pedestal. Each one will be a 9” wide sphere.

Challenges thus far: My own knowledge and capabilities are limited, I’m too nervous to even buy parts without getting approval of some kind. Sound issues: piezo speakers are a simple solution, but from what I’ve seen so far, the sound can be a bit harsh!

Anticipated challenges: If I don’t use a piezo speaker, I would most likely have to create a sound library of some kind. I’ve already looked into the temperature ranges of the human hand, but it will take some real life tinkering and experimentation to determine temperature ranges and thresholds.

Objectives and intentions: I sing all the time and it would be nice to have a friend that would sing with me or to me. I want people to have fun!

I have no idea how this piece relates to my current art practice. For once, I just want to make something that’s fun and nice and might make people smile. This isn’t a cop out! Maybe this will open my practice up to things like play and fun in the future.

The piece being held 🙂

Bottom: location of temp. sensor. Everything else is inside!
